Year 9 Graphic Design Elective group visit to NGV International Design Collection.

Graphic Design students happily visited the NGV International Design Collection to engage and respond to a range of thought provoking modern and contemporary functional design pieces. This excursion helped deepen students understanding about design and processes within the design/technology domain.

Students were given a tour guide and a theory-based workshop for an hour. After each piece that was shown and discussed, students confidently walked away from each design piece, keeping in mind that being a designer is not just about being creative and imaginative! A designer is also required to apply inquiry research-based processes that reflect adequate knowledge and pertinent factors that will aid or constrain the design process.

As students walked further into the inspiring collection, they also discovered with their own eyes and through discussion, that design is carried out by a community of people. Including people from a wide variety of backgrounds and traditions, and this very fact has clearly influenced the way design has progressed at different times.

Students gained knowledge about the increasing expectation that a designer has a responsibility to the community and the environment. Hence, their decisions should reflect reducing landfill waste and applying eco-friendly principles. This term, students are designing food packaging nets. I have been pleased to see that some students have thought about making a sustainable product. I only hope that more students who viewed and discussed the importance of making sustainable design pieces in the contemporary collection, were inspired to create sustainable design products in the future.

Furthermore, it was an awesome adventure including our bus ride and visit to Docklands food court. Students commented on how much fun it was and that they would love to see more design works in the near future.
